Transgender salt cravings are a legit phenomenon caused by our testosterone blocker spironolactone. Spiro is a diuretic that makes us have to pee more often and we lose sodium in the process.
Early in my transition I found my cravings to be insatiable, I’d drink the juice out of pickle jars and constantly reach for high sodium junk food. While these snacks scratched the itch, the long term affects of eating junk can result in loss of energy, an inability to focus, bloating and discomfort.
It’s imperative to focus on our mental health as trans people and part of the community healing process is taking care of our bodies. Because if we don’t have energy, we’re more prone to mood swings, irritation, and long term this can result in a poorer quality of life.
Combined with the right medication, making mindful food choices, and starting with something as simple as a Hot Girl Walk. These atomic habits can help liberate you from a toxic cycle of negative energy and self sabotage. Seriously these three things changed my life.
Note: I am not a mental health professional, I am talking from the perspective of my own experiences
Anyways that’s not to say we can’t ever treat ourselves because I love to indulge in fries, burgers, chips every now and again.
That’s why I want to share with you a recipe for a delicious chopped salad that is more mindful choice with still a bit of indulgence. Also it takes like 15 minutes to make tops and it’s a pretty inexpensive recipe as well.
Ingredients to Combat Those Transgender Salt Cravings
-Romaine Lettuce
-Cherry tomatoes
-Avocado
-Uncured Bacon (Turkey Bacon if you prefer or you have dietary restrictions)
-Blue Cheese Crumbles
-Trader Joe’s Vegan Creamy Dill Dressing (or dressing of your choice)
A More Mindful Choice
This Recipe Should Only Take 10-15 Minutes
1.) First, start by washing and drying one head of romaine lettuce thoroughly. Chop the lettuce into bite-sized pieces and place them in a large mixing bowl.
2.) Then you’ll go ahead and wash 1 cup of cherry tomatoes and slice them in half. Add them to the bowl with the romaine lettuce.
4.) Next it’s time to make the salad a little more savory. Fry up 1-2 slices of bacon until they are crispy. I like to blacken mine a bit. Once cooked, place them on a paper towel to drain off the excess grease. Then rough chop and add them to the mixing bowl.
3.) Additionally you’ll half one avocado, and depending on how big it is you can decide whether to use the whole avocado. Add to mixing bowl.
5.) Next we’ll add the blue cheese crumbles (I use Trader Joes), you’ll want to use around a quarter to a half cup, depending on your personal taste. I honestly just shake however much I want to use and I’m pretty generous.
6.) Finally, it’s time for the dressing. Trader Joe’s Vegan Creamy Dill Dressing is the perfect complement to this salad. This dressing is so good! And is a great alternative to ranch (which is a guilty pleasure of mine I admit) But this dressing seriously is less than half the calories of ranch. Then you’ll toss the salad obvi.
7.) And there you have it, you can eat it as a snack or make a larger portion for your meal. Also feel free to add whatever you want. I had some sprouts laying around and those go bad in like two seconds so I gave it a go… Kinda wish I didn’t put them in there tbh but that’s beside the point.
